A hint of Hawaii arrived on the 8th of August, at Thistle Court Care Home for this year’s Tiki themed summer BBQ. The decked rear garden was transformed with bunting and colourful signs, and even the refreshments kiosk went Hawaiian. Many residents (who they fondly refer to as family members) got involved and Sarah, Home Manager shared “it was wonderful for family members that usually choose to spend their time in the comfort of their rooms join in and such a community feel with team members coming in on their day off to help and support with their children”.
Burgers and hotdogs fresh from the grill were served alongside cakes and desserts. Mocktails were made by Thistle Court’s Administrator Tracey, and the strawberry daiquiri proved a huge success, with not a drop left! With plates cleared and appetites satisfied, the fun shifted to a Tiki-themed bean bag toss, cactus hoop throws and all to the soundtrack of Hawaiian music. A raffle with a selection of goodies rounded off the activities, with plenty of laughter.
The team members at Thistle Court had one last surprise for family members, saving it until the very end of the day. As the games slowed and the day began to wind down, the familiar chimes of an ice cream van making its way up right up to the deck area. This thoughtful touch meant family members could choose their favourite ice creams, from classic cones to tubs with sprinkles, just as they would have done years ago. No one was forgotten; every family member and every team member enjoyed a treat together in the sunshine. It was a gesture that spoke volumes about the care and thought the team put into the day.
